Anthocyanins: Natural Performance & Recovery Gains
Anthocyanins are powerful plant compounds found in dark berries, including New Zealand blackcurrants. A growing body of sports nutrition research shows that anthocyanins can enhance exercise performance, support blood flow and accelerate recovery from hard training.
How Do Anthocyanins Work?
One of the key mechanisms that produces the performance-enhancing qualities of anthocyanins is improved vascular function.
Anthocyanins can increase nitric oxide availability and improve blood vessel function. In simple terms, they support blood flow during exercise. Better circulation means our muscles can get hold of oxygen and nutrients more quickly and effectively. Pretty cool!
Anthocyanins may also help regulate oxidative stress, the cellular damage caused when hard exercise produces more harmful molecules than the body can naturally manage.
Performance Enhancing Evidence
Research on New Zealand blackcurrant extract has demonstrated measurable improvements in exercise performance.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled cycling study, seven days of blackcurrant supplementation improved 16.1 km cycling time-trial performance by 2.4% compared with placebo; this equates to an average 44-second improvement. The same study found a 27% increase in fat oxidation during moderate-intensity exercise.
A separate controlled study found that seven days of blackcurrant supplementation increased total running distance during a high-intensity intermittent running test by 10.6%, with a 10.8% increase in sprint distance.
These results support the role of anthocyanins as a powerful performance-enhancing ingredient, particularly for endurance and high-intensity exercise.
Recovery Benefits
Anthocyanins are probably best known for their impact on recovery. The evidence for recovery is particularly strong following high-intensity exercise that causes muscle damage, such as hard intervals sessions or gym work.
A 2021 study found that New Zealand blackcurrant supplementation substantially improved recovery following strenuous eccentric exercise. The study looked at the prevalence of creatine kinase, which is the key marker of exercise-induced muscle damage.
At 96 hours post-exercise, the study found 84% lower creatine kinase compared with placebo. Strength recovery was also significantly faster, while muscle soreness was reduced during the recovery period.
This study provided clear evidence that anthocyanins (derived from New Zealand Blackcurrants) reduced muscle damage response.
