The Endurance Athlete's Guide to Beta-Alanine

How Beta-Alanine Works for Endurance

Unlike bicarb, beta-alanine isn’t an instant race-day buffer. It is an amino acid that acts as the primary building block for carnosine, a compound stored inside your muscle fibers.

During high-intensity efforts, your muscles accumulate hydrogen ions H+, causing local pH levels to drop. Carnosine acts as an intramuscular buffer, helping neutralise these acidic ions so your muscle fibers can keep contracting at full force.

By supplementing daily, you elevate your baseline muscle carnosine stores by 40% to 80% over several weeks, giving you a wider margin of work before muscular acidosis forces you to slow down.

The Daily Usage Strategy

To get the full performance benefits, beta-alanine requires a consistent approach built on total cumulative intake rather than race-day timing.

Understanding the Skin Tingle (Paresthesia)

The most common side effect is a mild, temporary tingling sensation on the skin, known as paresthesia.

Why it happens: Beta-alanine interacts with sensory neurons beneath the skin.

Is it dangerous? Not at all. It is a completely harmless physiological response that peaks within 30–60 minutes and fades naturally.

How to reduce it: If you dislike the sensation, try splitting your daily dose into smaller servings spaced 3 to 4 hours apart.

For endurance athletes, beta-alanine is a long-term investment in your performance. By maintaining a daily habit through your preparation phase, you build the internal muscle buffering needed to handle mid-race surges, steep climbs, and strong finishes when fatigue sets in.
