GB ultra runner Alex Milne delivered a sensational performance at the 2025 Comrades Marathon, finishing 6th overall. Covering 89.98km (55.91 miles) in a mind-bending 5:34:08, Alex averaged under 6mins/mile over South Africa’s unforgiving terrain. Alex has been an early adopter of Bicarrb, using it at the World 100km and the 2025 London Marathon. Once again, Alex turned to the salty gel for a little extra boost.

A Masterclass in Ultra Racing

Alex stuck to his signature strategy: "run your own race." While others surged early, he held back — sitting outside the top 50 in the opening stages. But as the hills mounted and the heat rose, Alex began his charge. With calm precision, he worked through the field, climbing steadily into the top 10 and ultimately claiming 6th place, improving on his 2024 result of 9th in the Up Run.

How BiCarrB Helped Power an Elite Ultramarathoner

As one of the few athletes in the elite field using sodium bicarbonate supplementation, Alex leveraged the benefits of BiCarrB to go the distance.

Here’s how BiCarrB helps in Ultras

  • ☀️ Heat Resilience: Comrades is notorious for its brutal heat. The sodium content in BiCarrB supports hydration which can help prevent cramp and heat-related decline.
  • 💪 Endurance Confidence: With a precise, gut-friendly formula, BiCarrB helps athletes stay stronger for longer, especially over ultra distances where small margins become decisive.
  • 🧪 Lactate Buffering: As lactate levels rise during challenging sections of the course, like uphills, bicarbonate helps buffer acid buildup.
